Air Conditioning

Why service your air conditioning system?

  • Your cars air conditioning system will lose 10-15% of its refrigerant every year, this means that after 3 years your system (if not serviced) can be down by as much as 45% of its refrigerant. This makes the compressor run for longer therefore reducing your MPG.
  • Do you get a ‘Musty’ smell when using your Air-conditioning? This can be caused by a build up of fungus and bacteria within the evaporator core, this can emit a peculiar smell and sometimes lead to an allergic reaction in extreme cases. This is sometimes called ‘Sick Car Syndrome’. We can rectify this for you at relatively low cost, in most cases while you wait
  • Did you know that your vehicles air-conditioning system has a filter called receiver drier or an accumulator, depending on the type of system your vehicle is fitted with. These have a 2 to 3-year life span, and only a 4-hour life span if open to the atmosphere. If not replaced they can have dramatic effects on the service life of your system.

New Air Conditioning Legislation (post-2015 cars)

  • A new EU directive came into operation in January 2017 that meant all new cars must now only use the new air conditioning gas 1234YF. The main difference between the old-style gas (R134) and the new 1234YF gas is down to its environmental credentials. The old R134 gas has a significantly higher global warming potential than the new gas. At the moment, the new 1234YF gas is significantly more expensive than the original R134. As the technology needed to re-gas or maintain the air conditioning system is different, only trained and certified technicians should work on the car or van, and only those garages that have made the investment in the new air conditioning machines can re-gas the systems. Currently, there are very few garages that have made that investment, including many main dealerships. However, here at Ferris Garage, we have invested in a new machine and training which means we are one of the only certified independent garages in Cornwall that can work on the new 1234YF air conditioning systems.
